Home Theater Design -- Come Over To The Dark Side
David Gruttadaurio
Before going into color issues, first things first… You want to choose high quality paint from a reputable manufacturer. Stay away from economy brands no matter how good a deal you think you're getting. Now select the paint finish. Go with FLAT! It's true that glossy and semi-gloss are great for easy cleaning. BUT the last thing you want is light from the screen reflecting off shiny surfaces. Don't use it on walls, don't use it on doors, and don't use it even on the trim. Ok… now choose the color and no, it doesn't have to be black. Really… who wants the walls of their family room totally black? Even dedicated theater owners shy away from black because they want their theater to have some style to it. Black walls are pretty hard to decorate. Dark tan, brown, burgundy, etc. will work. You'll find dark walls significantly reduce the spread of light reflection from the screen to the sides. This way everyone can stay focused on the screen without any annoying distractions. And isn't that what why you built your home theater in the first place? Next week: Sound Rebound David
